How is this different from extracting straight from a P&ID?

The template is a manual form you fill and issue to a vendor. Upload a P&ID set instead and the same datasheets come back with Tag No., Service, P&ID Sheet, Process Variable, Signal Class, Signal Type, System, Loop No., and Location already populated. Vendor, Model, Range, Process Connection, Wetted Materials, Setpoint, and Safety Function are typically completed from the specification rather than the P&ID.

What ISA-20 sections does the template follow?

The template follows the ISA-20 section structure: Identification (who the instrument is and where it lives), Process (what it measures), Signal (what it sends), Mounting (where it is installed), Final Element (valve specifics, only relevant for control valves and on-off valves), Vendor (manufacturer fill), References and Notes (setpoint, safety function, connected equipment). Each section opens on its own header row in the form so the engineer can scan from top to bottom.
