Common questions
What is a loop sheet?
A loop sheet (or loop folder index) is the master register of every control loop on a project. Each row records one loop with its tag, instrument type, signal class, function (indicate, control, trip), the P&ID it lives on, the matching loop diagram reference, and the per-instrument datasheet reference. The loop sheet is the table-of-contents on the front of the loop folder a commissioning engineer carries to the field.
What columns are in this template?
Eleven columns: Loop Number, Service, Tag Number, Instrument Type, Signal Class, Function, P&ID Drawing, Loop Diagram Ref, Datasheet Ref, Description, Notes. Signal Class is a dropdown (AI / AO / DI / DO / N/A). Auto-filter is enabled on every column and the header row is frozen.
Can I edit the template in any spreadsheet tool?
Yes. The format is plain .xlsx and opens in Excel, Google Sheets, and LibreOffice.
Can I extend the template for a larger project?
Yes. The template ships with 48 blank rows. Add rows beneath the example row and the validation, filter, and column widths carry through. A typical plant carries 200-800 loops; the schema holds at that scale.
How is this different from extracting straight from a P&ID?
The template is a manual starting point you fill yourself. Upload a P&ID set instead and the same schema comes back with one row per loop: Tag, Type, Signal Class, Function, and the P&ID page reference already populated. Loop Diagram and Datasheet refs stay open for the loop engineer to fill from the folder.
What goes in the Function column?
The loop function: Indicate, Control, Trip, Alarm, Interlock, Shutdown, or Indicate + Alarm for combined functions. Loop function is what distinguishes a 4-20mA monitoring loop from a 4-20mA control loop from a hard-wired SIS trip; the column accepts free text so functions outside the standard set still fit.
